How to Transfer Embroidery Files from DVD to a Janome ATA Card

Owning a Janome 1001 or a similar vintage embroidery machine is a source of joy. Transferring new designs from a DVD to your ATA card can be straightforward — here's how to do it.

What You'll Need

• A computer with a DVD drive (built-in or external USB)

Understanding the ATA Card

The Janome 1001 uses an older ATA flash card format — these are thicker and more cartridge-like than modern SD cards, and not interchangeable with them. Make sure the card you're using is specifically made for older Janome machines.

You'll also need the matching Janome ATA Card Writer, which connects via USB. Since this hardware is discontinued, it can sometimes be found through Janome dealers or on eBay. Without it, there's no way to write designs to the card from your computer.
